Al Pacino And Karl Urban Play Hangman With A Serial Killer In New Trailer

If you start a trailer set to the Animals’ House of the Rising Sun, you’re going to get my attention. Add the fact it’s a murder mystery starring Al Pacino and Karl Urbanand I’ll be buying my ticket before the trailer ends. That trailer is for the new film Hangman.

They synopsis for the film is rather simple:

“A homicide detective teams up with a criminal profiler to catch a serial killer whose crimes are inspired by the children’s game Hangman.”

The film is being helmed by former stuntman turned director Johnny Martin based on a script by Michael Caissie and Charles Huttinger, as well as Phil Hawkins. Pacino plays homicide detective Ray Archer, who had his badge number left at the scene of a murder. He is teamed with Will Ruiney (Urban), a criminal profiler and they are being shadowed by a journalist named Christi Davies (Brittany Snow). As the synopsis says, there is a notoriously vicious serial killer who is playing a twisted game of Hangman — and it is somehow tied to Archer’s past.

Hangman

It’s hard to tell exactly how the Hangman game is working. The game involves guessing letters to try to figure out a word and wrong guess ads a piece to the person being hung until either the word is solved or the person is hung. It’s basically what Wheel of Fortune is. But how the killer is using it is unclear in the trailer.

‘Hangman’ Trailer: Al Pacino Plays Deadly Game With Serial Killer

“I don’t want to see them die for what I did,” growls Al Pacino as the grizzled homicide detective in Johnny Martin’s upcoming crime thriller Hangman. This new trailer doesn’t make clear exactly what Pacino did – whether he missed a vowel or consonant in the child’s game of the title, or maybe something worse – but victims are hanging around all over town.

Set to the tune of “House of the Rising Sun,” the trailer introduces us to Pacino’s homicide detective Ray Archer and his criminal-profiling partner Will Ruiney (Karl Urban). They’re trying to catch a notoriously vicious serial killer who is playing a twisted version of the kids’ game Hangman. Brittany Snow plays journalist Christi Davies, shadowing the detectives.

Martin, exec producing along with Jonathan Saba, directed from a script by Michael Caissie & Charles Huttinger, and Phil Hawkins.

Saban Films and Lionsgate will release the film on Ultra VOD November 24, and in theaters and On Demand December 22.

Play along with Hangman and take a look at the trailer above.

Brainstorm Media has picked up distribution rights to writer-director Justin Kelly’s I Am Michael starring James Franco, Zachary Quinto, and Emma Roberts, and will released the indie in U.S. theaters and on digital January 27. The pic premiered at Sundance last year and is produced by Franco and Vince Jolivette of Rabbit Bandini, Michael Mendelsohn of Patriot Pictures, and Scott Reed and Ron Singer of That’s Hollywood and exec produced by Gus Van Sant.

Based on Benoit Denizet-Lewis’ New York Times article My Ex-Gay Friend, the film tells the true-life story of Michael Glatze (Franco), a high profile queer youth activist who created national controversy when denounced his gay lifestyle and became a straight Christian pastor. It follows Michael from his life in San Francisco with his boyfriend Bennett (Quinto),  to his days of personal self-discovery and religious reawakening. He lands at a Christian Bible school in rural Wyoming where he meets his girlfriend, Rebekah (Roberts), and becomes the pastor of his own church.

The picture is financed by Mendelsohn’s Union Patriot Capital Management, LLC.

The deal was negotiated between Brian O’Shea of The Exchange, Michelle Shwarzstein for Brainstorm Media, and Mendelsohn.
